MPA Commitment Tracker

Country governments are charged with protecting our marine and coastal ecosystems. But how will they do this in the face of the many threats they face? One way is by committing to saving some percentage of these vital marine areas. These commitments to ocean protection often come via Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Most commitments are being implemented through the Convention on Biological Diversity, but there are other agreements of ocean protection that need coverage too. In order to be successful, these MPA Commitments need leadership, long term funding, locally-relevant approaches to compliance and enforcement, and public accountability.

You are the key to ensuring the countries keep their commitments to ocean protection!

So how can you track countries and their commitments over time? One way is through the Protect Planet Ocean Commitment Tracker, the world's only global datastore of marine protection commitments made to date.

The PPO Commitment Tracker and the interactive MPA pages are used together to track progress made towards MPA commitments over time throughout the different countries and regions of the world  this progress is will be reported at the regional and global levels in our new PPO Regional Reviews. Check back soon for updates!

If you know of a commitment in your country or region, but that is not listed in our Commitment Tracker, please send us an email so that we can to add it to the database.
