Bristol Bay - WWF is currently working to pass the Bristol Bay Protection Act (HR 1957 / S 1311 )to protect this important habitat in the Bering Sea and Kamchatka region from offshore oil and gas leasing and development. Bristol Bay is one of the most productive marine ecosystems in the world. The bay is the site of the world's largest wild sockeye salmon runs, important nursery grounds for red king crab and Pacific halibut, staging areas and wintering grounds for tens of millions of seabirds, and a feeding ground and migration corridor for marine mammals, including five endangered species.

Save Critical Habitat for Endangered Whales and Marine Life
Learn more
U.S. activists: Stop offshore oil and gas drilling in Bristol Bay, Alaska, which is critical habitat for endangered whales and marine life.
Bristol Bay needs to be permanently protected from the high risks of oil and gas development. Offshore drilling there poses multiple risks, from disturbance to whales caused by seismic testing, to the potential for catastrophic oil spills like the Exxon Valdez disaster. Bristol Bay’s notorious winds, powerful seas, variable ice and cold temperatures led the federal Minerals Management Service to predict that drilling there would result in at least one major oil spill, in addition to numerous smaller spills. An oil spill in Bristol Bay would have devastating impacts with little chance of a complete recovery.
