WWF: the dedication of Peter Bechtel to getting Quirimbas National Park (Mozambique) designated.

The process to designate Quirimbas National Park started with a request to create it from the Mozambican locals. WWF's Peter Bechtel Bechtel made it his mission to help them establish a park that would benefit all - local residents, visitors, wildlife, and the land and sea they share. With much support but no financial backing, he worked without pay for months until WWF came forward with the funding necessary to get things done.

The Fiji Islands Marine Ecoregion (FIME) contains a diversity of marine habitats of global significance. In recognition of this and the growing threats to its health and resilience, in 2004, the Government of Fiji committed that at least 30% of Fiji’s inshore & offshore marine areas, (I qoliqoli's) will have come under a "comprehensive, ecologically, representative networks of MPAs, which are effectively managed and financed.

In 2006, the District Government of Berau (island of Kalimantan, Indonesia) issued a decree declaring the establishment of a 1.2 million hectare marine protected area (MPA).
